Writing
Exercises
You've
come to the right place if you've got writer's block or just want
to work on something other than your current WIP. Below are some
writing exercises to help start the words flowing again. I'll
be adding more in the future, and if you have a favorite writing
exercise you'd like to share, let me know and I'll try to include
it here as an idea by you.
1.
In
a children's book class I took, we had to rewrite a classic story,
like Goldilocks or The Three Little Pigs, and then tell the whole
story in three word sentences. It's really hard, but can also
be fun to read them out loud if you are using it as a group exercise.
2.
Another classic writing exercise is to write down five completely
random words and then make a story out of them. Variations: have
someone else pick five words (don't tell them what it is for -
you'll get different words that way), open the dictionary five
times and choose the word your finger lands on.
3.
Go to the mall, grocery store, etc. pick a person and write one
page about who they are. Variation: actually go interview the
person after you write about them and see how different their
story really is. Now make one of the two versions of the person
the evil twin.
